Testing
Gateway Exams: The Gateway tests are end-of-course tests in English II, Algebra I, and Biology which Tennessee students must pass as part of the requirements for earning a regular high school diploma. This program was mandated by the Tennessee State Legislature.
End-of-Course Exams: In 1998, in response to state legislation, the State Board of Education determined that end-of-course tests would be developed in 10 high school subjects in addition to the Writing Test currently administered in the 11th grade. Presently End-of-Course exams are mandatory for students enrolled in Math FoundationsII, English I, Physical Science, and United States History.
TCAP Writing Assessment: This exam is mandatory for all 11th graders. The purpose of the exam is to measure writing skills.
PLAN: The PLAN exam is an optional exam offered as enrichment for 10th grade students. It is a pre-ACT and allows students to practice their test-taking skills in preparation for college-entrance exams. There is a charge for taking this optional exam.
PSAT: The PSAT exam is an optional exam offered as enrichment for 10th and 11th grade students. It is a pre-SAT and allows students to practice their test-taking skills in preparation of college-entrance exams. Based on their score, 11th grade students may compete for prestigious National merit Scholarships by taking this exam. There is a charge for taking this optional exam.
The ACT exam is the most widely used college entrance exam. Usually taken during the junior and senior year, the next testing date is October 28, 2006. For more information click
